Both can increase coarse pore space, but they are different materials. Neither is universally better.
Both change physical behavior
Pumice and perlite are components used to create coarse pore space in growing media. Neither is complete soil, and neither can be ranked as universally better without knowing the container, crop, irrigation, desired weight, and production duration.

Particle size matters
The product name alone does not describe the pore system it will create. Fine particles can occupy spaces between coarse particles. Grade, proportion, surrounding ingredients, processing, and time all influence air space and water holding.
When pumice may fit
- A durable mineral component is useful in the complete recipe.
- Additional weight is acceptable or helpful.
- The target particle distribution fits the container and crop.
When perlite may fit
- Low handling weight matters.
- The propagation or container formulation is designed around it.
- The selected grade and proportion fit the desired air-and-water balance.
What neither product does
Neither replaces the organic, mineral, chemical, and biological functions of a complete growing medium. Pumice also does not create an outlet for water in a poorly graded landscape. If a wet site has nowhere for water to go, diagnose drainage before purchasing an amendment.
