Neither maximum air nor maximum water is the goal. Plants need a balance appropriate to the crop and production system.
Two useful pore outcomes
Some pores remain water-filled after drainage; others become air-filled.
Management changes the ideal balance
Crop, container, climate, irrigation frequency, and production duration all matter. A coarse mix can require more frequent irrigation; a fine mix can remain wet longer.
Do not rank media by “more drainage”
Professional media must be matched to the production system rather than placed on a universal better-to-worse scale.

Container dimensions, crop, irrigation and duration should lead the material decision.
