How Much Mulch Do I Need? Cubic Yard Guide

Measure bed area and choose the actual mulch depth before ordering. A one-inch refresh uses far less material than a new three-inch installation.

Updated August 13, 2026 · By Specialty Soils

Quick answer

Mulch quantity is mostly a surface-area problem. The biggest source of over-ordering is assuming every established bed needs the same depth as a brand-new installation.

Mulch quantity is mostly a surface-area problem. The biggest source of over-ordering is assuming every established bed needs the same depth as a brand-new installation.

Measure the bed area

Break irregular beds into simple rectangles and circles and add the areas together.

Decide whether this is a refresh or new installation

Existing beds often need only enough mulch to restore coverage. New bare beds may need a deeper initial layer.

Calculate cubic yards

Multiply square footage by depth in feet and divide by 27. The product-page calculator can do this automatically.

Keep mulch away from trunks and crowns

Do not use extra material by piling it against trees and shrubs.

Round sensibly

A small overage can help with uneven bed edges, but huge safety factors can create a leftover pile.
