About Us

The story of Specialty Soils began more than 30 years ago — with a curiosity about soil that started in a classroom at Washington State University. Our founder, soil scientist Chuck Nichols, built the early foundation of the company through his passion for understanding soil and creating blends that help plants grow strong and healthy.

Originally founded in Puyallup, Washington as Soils Inc., the company later moved to Covington, Washington, where it took on the name Specialty Soils Inc. in 1996.

Eight years ago, the next chapter of the company began when Angelo Osborn took ownership of the business. With a background in landscaping and nursery work, Angelo had spent years working closely with plants, soils, and growers. That hands-on experience gave him a deep appreciation for how important good soil is to successful gardens, landscapes, and farms.

Since taking over the company, Angelo has continued to build on the strong foundation that was started decades earlier, while bringing new energy, ideas, and growth to the business.

One of Angelo’s biggest priorities has been making Specialty Soils a true family operation. Over the years he has brought members of his family into the business, working together to continue developing soil blends and serving the community.

Today Specialty Soils remains a locally rooted, family-run company, focused on supporting gardeners, landscapers, farmers, and growers throughout the region. While the company has grown and evolved, the core belief remains the same:
